Resolutions, goals, whatever you want to call them. It wouldn’t be a New Year without them!
– Make my new career a success
I have started the New Year as a self-employed writer and editor, having decided to leave my job in search of something a little more enjoyable. I am prepared for a year of hard work, but hopefully I will end the year without caving in and getting a part-time job somewhere. Obviously I have a lot of little goals to fulfil in this area – commonly called a business plan – but that is too too boring to blog about
– Be healthier
Let’s face it, you can’t really avoid a new year’s resolution to eat less and exercise more. I am rejoining the gym on Monday (sob) after my foot fiasco (which still feels a bit nauseating when I touch it), and aiming to cook a wider range of healthier things. At least I won’t be sitting in a chocolate filled office anymore!
– Socialise More
Unfortunately it’s all too easy to settle at home in these cold and dark days, so I’ve resolved to make a solid effort to get out and see my friends more. Looking at my calendar for January and February though, I think I might have got a little carried away…
– Finish the 7 Habits for Highly Effective People
I yearn to be a highly effective person. I envisage my life running like a well-oiled machine. This is the year to MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
– Progress well on my Classics Club list.
I must confess that I am somewhat at a loss to figure out how I have failed to progress quicker, considering how much time I spent reading. This year, no more! I will read more, and I will not leave the ill-advised choices – I’m looking at you, Paradise Lost – to the last minute.
– Publish a novel
Fairly self-explanatory goal. Whether a proper publisher takes it, or whether I self-publish, I don’t care! I’m publishing a novel this year.
The World According To Laura 
Good luck with your plans Laura! I’ve just done the same thing and this IS the year I will become a self-employed writer – 10,000 words into my first novel. It was realising that I can publish and be damned even if a ‘proper’ publisher doesn’t take an interest that gave me the impetus. Self-publishing really opens the door. Though I don’t have a clue how to go about it yet! I thought I’d check out WordPress for others maybe doing the same or similar stuff in 2014.

How exciting! Yes, I just started to think that if not now, when? There’s always plenty of reasons not leave it a bit longer, and I shall never know if I could be a bestseller if no-one else ever reads my writing!! The Writers and Artist Yearbook has quite a good section on self-publishing, and there’s some interesting information on The Guardian website as well. Good luck!!

That’s it exactly – why let your stuff sit on a slush pile because one arbiter of what the public wants has deemed it not of interest? At least if it’s out there folk can decide for themselves :-).
